We stopped by Heidi Baker’s home in Topanga Canyon to learn about her label OZMA, what inspires her designs, and lastly - to hear all about her life in a Yurt.
Quick intro. Who you are and what you do?
My name is Heidi. I'm the Designer/Owner of OZMA! I live in Topanga Canyon in Los Angeles.
Tell us about the “Ozma of CA” girl. Who do you design for?
Honestly, I'm pretty much designing for myself. I often get up early in the morning to head for a surf. Instead of getting dressed in front of the mirror, it's not unusual that I'm getting into one of my favorite rompers on the side of the PCH. By the way, it feels so good to see rush hour traffic go by while wearing a post-surf smile and salty hair.
I love having easy, beautiful clothing that lets me look ‘put together’ and not like the total beach bum that I am; whether I'm at coffee with a friend an hour later, or in my studio working, or in a buyers appointment.
The OZMA girl is a free-spirited muse. She lives with a sense adventure and tomboyish attitude that doesn't want to be slowed down by deciding what to wear. She breathes a natural feminine strength, a uniquely timeless and effortless personal style, and a go-anywhere, try-anything outlook on life. OZMA's pieces are very simple so a really fantastic blank slate for her to be herself.
Give us some insight into Yurt life, best and worst thing about it?
Best: Waking up in the morning and seeing the orange and pink sky over the ocean, right from my bed!
Worst : The rain makes the most magical drumming sound, but we've been having some pretty intense storm-like weather lately and have definitely not loved being woken up in the middle of the night with such intense pounding and wind.
Tell us about two cool Topanga spots…under the radar restaurants or your favorite places to hang in that area.
Topanga is not congested with too many stores or restaurants, which I love, but we do have our gems! Dust & Fog (formerly Heyoka Hideout) is a super cool vintage store that has bands play on their back porch every so often. They keep it simple and magical ... twinkling lights in the trees, a bucket of free beer, frogs chirping along to the music, and good vibes. My favorite place to eat is the Topanga Living Cafe because they have killer smoothies adorned with a flower and a tasty menu, all made from farmer’s market produce.
How do you spend your downtime?
Surfing, hanging with my pup, cooking dinners with friends, and drinking wine :)
