Zander Price, Photographer

We chat about surfing, Burning Man and travel essentials with photographer and #hobesguy, Zander Price.

What’s a typical day like in the life of Zander Price?
I guess a typical day really depends where I am. Right now I'm in LA, so this morning I woke up early in my van (my California home on wheels) in Venice, got a coffee, and drove out to Topanga Beach for a surf. After, I made breakfast, sent out some emails, and headed back to Venice and spent most of the day editing photos. Tonight I'll have some dinner with friends and hopefully get to bed early and repeat it again tomorrow.

What was your last travel destination? Would you recommend it and why/why not?
My last international trip was to Playa Maderas in Nicaragua. I've spent quite a bit of time there this year and I absolutely love it. Maderas Village is a second home for me now. It's a great combination of good surf, good food, and great people. It's the most inviting environment for a solo traveler that I've found anywhere in the world. Highly recommend.

We’re guessing you’re on the road about 80% of the time. What are a few items you always keep with you?
I must at all times have the following:
Canon 5d Mark ii camera and 40mm pancake lens (perfect lens for travel)
13inch Mac Book Pro
FluxMob Bolt portable battery
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
Assorted black clothes

I don't like to have anything that isn't easily replaceable. My van got robbed in Barcelona once and they stole everything EXCEPT my camera, which was hidden. The only things I cared about were the pictures on that memory card so I dodged a bullet. Maybe I cared about my leather jacket a little bit...but I got over that...eventually.

Do you bring any reading material with you? Anything you’d suggest?
I always have my Kindle with me. I've been reading a lot of classics lately. A Moveable Feast (Hemingway) and East of Eden (Steinbeck) will always be favorites no matter how many times I read them.

Burning Man is coming up. What are you most looking forward to?
You've caught me just after BM, actually. I keep writing and deleting things trying to answer this question. I can't say that I was looking forward to anything specific, but I will say that over the years Burning Man has become the marker to the start of a new year for me. It's a place where I reunite with old friends from around the world, and make new friends that I'll see in the year to come. Every year is better than the last and this year didn't disappoint.

You always seem to have your camera with you. What are the moments you most like to capture?
My best shots are always candid moments when people don't know I'm taking the photo. I'm terrible at setting up shots and I think I make people feel awkward when I try to direct them. If I can get a stealth shot when someone isn't looking it usually works out well. I also prefer to shoot inanimate objects instead of people.

We know you’re pretty into surfing. What is it about the surf that you love?
Surfing is just beautiful and humbling. I've been surfing on and off for 15 years and I'm still very, very average at best. I remember the first real wave I got in Long Beach, NY almost exactly 15 years ago I think. It was a left and I finally got my board pointed in the right direction and could feel the speed and glide of a good ride. Been chasing that same feeling ever since.

Words to live by?
